After All This Time, Why Does One Email Still Bring Businesses Down?
Cyber security conversations often jump straight to sophisticated threats: ransomware gangs, nation-state actors, zero-day exploits. In reality, for the vast majority of UK businesses, none of that is how an attack actually starts. It starts with an email that looks routine enough to open.
The Numbers Tell a Consistent Story
The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 found that phishing was experienced by 38 percent of UK businesses, and among businesses that identified a breach or attack, it was named the most disruptive attack type by 69 percent of them. Phishing-only incidents, with no other attack type present, actually rose to 51 percent of breached businesses in the latest survey. Whatever else changes year to year in the threat landscape, email remains the door attackers try first.
Why Email Works So Well as an Attack Route
Email is trusted by default. Staff open dozens of messages a day without pausing to scrutinise each one, because most of them are entirely legitimate. Attackers exploit that routine, not through complex hacking, but by making a malicious message look exactly like the ordinary ones that surround it: an invoice, a delivery notification, a message from a colleague or supplier.
Unlike a technical vulnerability, there is no patch for a moment’s inattention. That is precisely why email remains the most reliable route in, even as other defences improve.
It Is Not Just About Clicking a Link
Modern phishing goes beyond an obviously suspicious link. Business email compromise, where an attacker gains access to a real account or convincingly impersonates one, is used to redirect payments, request fraudulent transfers, or extract sensitive information, often without a single obvious red flag in the message itself. These attacks specifically target the routine trust built into everyday business email.
What Actually Reduces the Risk
No single control eliminates phishing risk, but a few things make a genuine difference: email security filtering that catches a large proportion of malicious messages before they reach an inbox, multi-factor authentication so a stolen password alone is not enough to gain access, and staff who have been shown real examples of what these emails look like, rather than a one-off training session years ago.
Why “Just Be Careful” Isn’t a Strategy
Telling staff to be vigilant is not nothing, but it is not sufficient on its own. Attackers only need one person, on one busy day, to make one mistake. A layered approach, filtering, authentication, and staff security awareness training working together, protects the business even when an individual email does get through.
How AOIT Networks Approaches It
We combine email security filtering, multi-factor authentication, and ongoing staff awareness as standard, rather than treating any one of them as sufficient on its own. The goal is reducing how many malicious emails reach an inbox in the first place, and limiting the damage on the rare occasion one does.
